Puddle Fact: The first golf balls were made of feathers wrapped in leather
Building a Mini Golf Course
The Puddle Project, a community initiative dedicated to providing meaningful activities for the service users, embarked on an exciting journey to create a mini golf course. This article takes you through the various stages of this remarkable project, highlighting the dedication, teamwork, and meticulous planning that went into transforming a piece of land into a challenging and entertaining mini golf course.
Clearing the Land
The project began with a hands-on approach as MacIntyre service users enthusiastically cleared the designated area of twigs, brambles, and nettles. This initial step not only prepared the site for construction but also engaged the participants, fostering a sense of ownership and involvement.
Marking Out the Course
The team then used line paint to mark out the layout of the nine-hole mini golf course. Precision was crucial to ensure that all the holes would fit seamlessly within the available space. This stage was a creative process where the vision of the mini golf course started taking shape.
Perimeter Shuttering
To define the boundaries and maintain a consistent structure, 8 by 2 shuttering was erected around the perimeter of the course. This step added a professional touch to the project, giving it a polished appearance and ensuring that the course would remain intact.
Weed Membrane Installation
A critical aspect of course construction involved laying a fleece weed membrane across the entire area. This not only prevented weeds from infiltrating the course but also provided a stable foundation for subsequent layers.
Building the Foundation
The real work began with the application of a 50mm layer of MOT type 1 material across the course. After careful spreading and compression, another 30mm layer of granite dust, known as "granno," was applied and compressed again. This process ensured a solid, level foundation while maintaining the challenging contours necessary for a mini golf course. In total The Puddle team and service users moved 52 tonne of stone!
Water Management
While the aim was to create a challenging course, it was also crucial to prevent water from pooling in any area. Meticulous planning ensured that the course had proper drainage, minimising any disruption due to water accumulation.
Additional Weed Membrane
To further protect against weed growth and maintain the course's integrity, an additional layer of weed membrane was laid over the entire area.
Professional Grass Installation
Recognising the need for precision and safety, the project team decided to bring in professionals to install the grass. Trulawn, with their expertise, ensured that the turf was laid seamlessly. This step added a lush, green finish to the course, creating an inviting atmosphere for mini golf enthusiasts.
Final Touches
The final stage involved digging holes and cementing in the putting cups, marking the completion of The Puddle Mini Golf Course. The project, which began as a vision, had become a reality through dedication, teamwork, and hard work.
Puddle Round Up
Building a mini golf course at The Puddle Project was more than just construction; it was a labour of love and a testament to the power of community and collaboration with
fantastic companies such as MKMBS and Beechwood Landscapes. This project not only provided meaningful activities for MacIntyre service users but also created a fun and engaging recreational space for the entire community to enjoy. The dedication and meticulous planning that went into each stage of construction ensured that The Puddle Mini Golf Course would be a source of joy and entertainment for years to come.
